Introduction

This is a Makkan Surah. If the Quraysh (the tribe in Makkah from where our beloved Prophet Muhammad came) were fond of Makkah and proud of it, if they ptofited, by its central position and it guaranteed security, from their caravans of trade and commerce, let them be grateful, adore the One True God, and accept His Message.

Commentary

Who gave the Quraysh their talents for the arts
Of peace, for trade and commerce, and for journeys
south and north at proper seasons,
And made their home inviolable in Makkah?
Surely they, if any, should adore their Lord
And listen to His Message of Unity and Truth."

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

"For the covenants
(Of security and safeguard
Enjoyed) by the Quraysh,
Their covenants (covering) journeys
By winter and summer-
Let them adore the Lord
Of this House,
Who provides them
With food against hunger,
And with secuirty
Against fear (of danger)."
