The Last Unicorn (1982)
The Last Unicorn

The Last Unicorn is also a novel written by Peter S. Beagle.  I watched it when very young, and have not been able to forget it ever since :)  Unicorns don't exist, or do they?  Though I'd love to believe that they do, I must admit that I'm highly sceptical.  But this does not prevent me from liking them.  I find the cartoon really touching, especially the doomed love between her and Prince Lir.  At that age, I couldn't really accept the open-ended ending, which is why it stuck to my mind even more.  Of cos, I'd love to rewrite the ending and make it a 'happily ever after' thing, but then that'll be rather anticlimactic.
I am soooo glad that I have the videotape of The Last Unicorn...but the bad news is that my VCR is spoilt...so I'll have to wait for one fine day when I get the opportunity to relish it all over again.  Hopefully it wouldn't get all mouldy by that time!
Worth noting are the lovely songs in it, some of which are performed by Simon and Garfunkel.  The music playing in the background is from the movie...don't u find it full of pathos?

The Flight of Dragons (1982)
The Flight of Dragons
This is an animated movie based on the book The Flight of the Dragons by Peter Dickinson.  The reason that I like this cartoon so much is pretty simple, because I was mesmerized by it.  It just had this magically appealing quality for me.  At that time I watched it, it wasn't even in its entirety.  But I was strongly affected by it, a strong sense of pathos (of cos I didn't know this at that time) overwhelmed me when it ended.  It's a miracle that I managed to somehow discover the title.  Maybe one fine day, I'll go out there and search for this title and watch it from beginning to end and savour the delight all over again :)

The Dark Crystal (1982)
Kira

I guess after that introduction, it should come as no surprise that one of my favourite movies is The Dark Crystal.  It's a production by Jim Henson which is just sooooo fantastic.  Too bad it didn't make much of an impact...and I suppose it's doomed to stay that way :(

Labyrinth (1986)
Labyrinth
Yet another fantasy movie which I fell in love with.  At that age, I couldn't care less that David Bowie was the lead.  In fact, I didn't even have idea who he is :P  So Labyrinth introduced me to David Bowei rather than vice versa :Þ

Beauty and the Beast (1990)
Belle
Yes...this is one of the rare few (or should I say 'only'?) Disney cartoon that does not have a helpless damsel waiting for her Prince Charming to come to her rescue.  Pleeaaz...get real!!!  I really LOVE the twist...because it is Belle who saves the Beast rather than vice versa :)))  And it's nice that those lovey dovey scenes are kept to a minimum.  Mulan would've fitted the bill if not for the awful looking protagonist...noooo...I'm not a shallow person...but they based their impression of the Chinese on their stereotype...aka slitty eyes...mmm...wonder where the thick lips came from though.
Oh yes...that's not the only twist to the Disney convention...no one can say that the Beast is handsome...so for once, our heroine is not some silly gigglish girl who falls for looks.  Hooray for those who can see the beauty in the beast :)
