For those of you who are skipping breakfast in order to sleep a while longer or trying to lose weight, you are making a very big mistake. Research suggests that people who are successful at losing weight and maintaining weight loss eat breakfast every day.

Here are some reasons why:

Breakfast Helps to Kick Start your Metabolism

Breakfast is your first opportunity of the day to provide fuel to your body, speed up your metabolism and start burning calories.

Breakfast Prevents Overeating

Studies have shown that those who skips breakfast tends to eat more later the day, which increases the chance of gaining weight. Not only that, the choice of food is typically unhealthy. Eating a filling healthy breakfast ensures you will not resort to unhealthy choices (e.g. bagel, fried noodles, fried carrot cake). Furthermore, eating a large late night meal stimulates insulin and turns on fat storage which makes it much harder to lose.

What's a good breakfast? Anything that provides a good mix of carbohydrates (50-70%), protein (15-30%) and little fat (10-20%) makes a good wholesome breakfast. Examples are

  • yogurt
  • oatmeal/cereal and milk
  • sandwiches (bread with ham/eggs/cheese/tuna)
  • pancakes and milk
  • museli bars and milk
  • porridge with egg
  • salads with chopped eggs
  • roti prata with egg
  • potatoes with milk/eggs
  • steam carrot cake with milk
  • bean curd with biscuits
  • soup noodles with meat
  • milk with biscuits
  • even left-over rice and dishes. Just by reheating last night's food, you can get a nutritious and filling meal!

Note: For those of you who can't consume milk based product (i.e. lactose intolerance), you can  substitute it with soy milk or soy based products.
