Unreleased entries from my Jetty Log 17 September 2005
After an official Snakehead culling exercise in the morning, my arms got stressed again when I needed to pull up this 1.7 kg Diamond Trevally (Alectis indica) at the jetty later in the afternoon. Anyway, it was a great day:-)
Still considered Lucky Incidental Catches 13 August 2005
After five months of being absent from the jetty, Ah Wong struck gold with this huge 6 kg Golden Trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus). The last Goldie that he caught was in June 2004. It is really great to be back at the Jetty.
6 February 2005
Its Diamond Trevally (Alectis indica) visiting time again.
We scored a double when the silver raiders hit the jetty and started pulling rods butts off the ground. 29 January 2005
This 5 kg '5 Dot Com' (Chorinemus lysan) pulled my Abu Ultra Cast rod/ Abu BG9000 combo over the railings and broke 2 guides in the process. If not for the safety lanyard, I would have lost another set of fishing equipment. The last one without a safety line was pulled over by an unknown biggie in February 2002.
22 November 2004
Ah Wong lost a powerful fish right under the jetty that made his Penn Baitrunner spindle slip resulting in his trace being severed by the barnacles on the jetty pilings, but 15 minutes later, this Chermin (Alectis indica) put back the smile on him. 11 November 2004
This Diamond Trev (Alectis indica) took the live prawn and pulled the rod into a awesome parabolic that made it look like I'm on something really big. They never fail to make your heart stop a beat when they are raiding the jetty. Happy Deepavali!
25th September 2004
Another 4 kg Skinny (Chorinemus lysan) on the scale at Singapore's most popular Queenie hang-out. This fish was giving the jetty a wide berth as millions of Banded Perchlets (Terapon theraps) can be a real pain on the fins. However, it fell for a strategically placed live prawn away from the jetty and the teeming perchlets which have recently become somewhat of a nuisance. 15th August 2004
This Queenie (Chorinemus lysan) weighed 9 Kilos on the scale and gave us a thrill when the cards were almost down. It fought well, swam and provided us with its acrobatics almost half the length of the jetty and the rod was passed around several lamposts and a shelter with much appreciated help from Lor Kor (of the 70kg Sting Ray fame). It was finally brought up by Ah Wong when it volunteered to swim right into the waiting net.
25th June 2004
This 2.1 kg Goldie (Gnathanodon speciosus) made a delicious dinner for four at the kopi tiam and Ah Wong cliched the Haven's debut entry award for the First New Specie from Be dok Jetty.
7th March 2004
Schoolie Macks are back! This one lost a part of its tail to his 'brudders'. 13th February 2004
Taking leave from work proved productive as Queenies (Chorinemus lysan) are on a feeding frenzy. This 4.5kg fish gave the ABU BG9000 a good work-out before it was netted up by Ah Wong.
Ah Wong also had fun on another Queenie before the frenzy ended when the tambans dispersed into smaller schools and disappeared altogether.
Our regular friend, 'Wak Cowboy' with the catch of the day. A 2.5kg Spotted Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus guttatus). Today can be considered a good day, considering the lack of action in the last 4 weeks.
1st January 2004
School Queenies (Chorinemus lysan) are prowling to pick off what is left of the Tamban population.
November 2003
27th June 2003
Never expected a Tengirri (Scomberomorus commersoni) on a slow moving tide but this fish took the bait and somehow got choke and died without making a run. Anyway, ... great tucker for the grill. 14th June 2003
This 2 kilo Queenie (Chorinemus lysan) took the bait and made 2 acrobatic leaps out of the water before someone told me that I had a hit on my ABU Ultracast rod/7500C3 outfit. Now that is what I call recreational fishing:-) 24th May 2003
Our debut 2.2kg jetty Barramundi (Lates Calcarifer) aka Kim Bak Lor or Ikan Siakap. This bucket mouth quietly took the bait at dusk and put up a good resistance when I checked the suspicious slack on the main line. 17th May 2003
Ah Wong hit a 8kg Mumma Queenie (Chorinemus lysan) while tantalizing a huge Cuda to take his bait. Queenies are a great sportfish! Good eating too! But remember to remove its skin before cooking. 5th April 2003
Deja Vu. The last time we experienced total mayhem when the macks (Scomberomorus commersoni) walloped schools of baitfish was in 2001. We landed a few from a school of hundreds that raided the jetty on several runs. This schoolies are just the right size for the grill.
21st February 2003
A nice serving sized Kurau (Eleutheronema tetradactylon) which grabbed Ah Wong's bait when he was far from our station prospecting for gold. Must admit that I enjoyed the early part of the fight before he came a runnin'. 12th February 2003
A nice 1.5kg Kurau (Eleutheronema tetradactylon) broke the late afternoon boredom with a straight take and good run which mess up at least 3 other lines in the process. Another typical day at the Jetty. 8th February 2003
This 'Cuda (Sphyraena jello) made its debut appearance in the Haven's log when it ate Ah Wong's bait in the late afternoon. 21st January 2003
When the stars are in the right places, so are the fishes. It has been a while since I heard a reel scream before this 5 kilo plus Queenie (Chorinemus lysan) took out a reasonable amount of drag from my ABU 7000 ProRocket during the initial stages of the fight. Queenies are reputed to fight to the end and this one is no exception. 29th December 2002
A beautiful Blue-lined Hind (Cephalopholis formosa) from the jetty pilings. No prizes for guessing what the grouper ate for its picture to be taken. 29th December 2002
Another Chermin (Alectis indica). This one came up intact. 14th December 2002
As always, Ah Wong has never failed to provide an entry in the Haven's log. This time with a sumptuous Estuary Cod (Ephinephalus tavina) using a vernacular fishing technique. 30th November 2002
My first jetty Chermin (Alectis indica) and I had to share it with some ill-mannered, hungry and toothy monster... 17th November 2002
Finally, a good-sized Queenie (Chorinemus lysan) for Ah Wong, a thinking angler. 6th October 2002
This 2.3kg fish was the third Kurau (Eleutheronema tetradactylon) that has been landed since last week. They seem to be feeding voraciously to prepare themselves for the monsoon season. | ||||||||||||||||
