New Unicef PSA for children's rights
Orlando named Unicef goodwill ambassador
Orlando Bloom, best known for his roles in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Lord of the Rings" films, has supported UNICEF's work since 2007, when he first visited schools in impoverished districts of Nepal. UNICEF said Monday that as its ambassador, Bloom plans to focus on raising awareness of the global organization and advocating for needy children worldwide. Past ambassadors include Audrey Hepburn, Roger Moore, David Beckham and Vanessa Redgrave.

The surprising and unfair cinematic demise of Orlando Bloom
Orlando Bloom may not be the world's greatest actor, but he has suffered the fate even worse than that of many like him (Keanu Reeves, Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford) who dare to put the movie first and stardom second. By refusing to be larger than the character and larger than the narrative, he was tagged as a wooden performer and banished from Hollywood. For the sake of all who feel that serving the story should come before serving their own career, I hope to see Mr. Bloom back on the silver screen sometime soon. He may not have deserved Oscars, but he deserved more than just our scorn. Full article.
The Cross concept art
Andrew Niccol (writer/director of Gattaca) takes us into an oppressive future once again with The Cross. The film follows two travelers (one played by Orlando Bloom) that reach a border through which the commanding guard (Vincent Cassel) lets no one pass. Ever. Conflict, of course, ensues. and the synopsis
Mylar (Bloom) and his younger brother Castro come to a town to cross the border in search of a better life. The two travelers, full of hope, all too quickly realize that their journey leads them to an inescapable world full of doom. The enigmatic border is strictly enforced under the command of a guard, Guideon, who prohibits anyone from ever leaving. Castro doesn’t make it alive past two weeks, but Mylar defies all odds and becomes the first to successfully cross the border. And he also becomes the first to come back… all for the love of a woman, Vera. Mylar must now devise a plan not only to set himself free, but all of his fellow citizens as well. But perhaps crossing the border is not the answer. Perhaps the key lies in altering the border and whatever it may represent…
