Warhammer Novels 15.04.2003

Warhammer novels are set in the worlds of Warhammer and Warhammer 40 000. The worlds are the creation of Games Workshop and are created as an evergrowing background for their miniatures games, boardgames and roleplaying game. The latter two forms have generally disappeared from Games Workshop inventory over the years.

In the late eighties, Games Workshop released a series of well-regarded novels, edited by David Pringle, a noted SF critic who wrote 'Science Fiction: The Best 100 Novels', 'Modern Fantasy: The Best 100 Novels', 'The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction'.

These early novels released by Games Workshop were in a trade paperback format and were relatively expensive for their time.

The atmosphere of these early Warhammer novels were grim and infected with a strong sense of fatalism. What is unusual in these novels is the departure from the usual fairy tale ending. The inevitability of victory of light over darkness was not assured, being replaced by a never ending struggle. The writing were of a relatively high standard as compared to other game-related novels of that era. Infamous examples of bad writing abound, including Weis and Hickman's 'Dragonlance Chronicles' and others of their irk.

In the mid-nineties, a number of these novels were re-released by Boxtree. These releases were in the conventional paperback format. They were quickly sold out and were out of print within a few years.

At present, the Black Library, http://www.blacklibrary.co.uk, a subsidiary of Games Workshop, has began releasing a series of new Warhammer novels. One of two debut novels, 'Eye of Terror', is written by Barrington Bayley, a SF writer who was prominent during the New Wave of the 1960s.

The latter series of Warhammer books is generally more action-oriented while not abandoning the themes found in the earlier novels.
